Episode 21: Building Capacity for Tech Development

What’s in this Episode?

In the last episode of season 2, we talk about ways to distribute tech development based on projects and ideas from the Global Majority. Our guests describe the way they have been developing software around lexicographical data as well as community training around Wikidata, supported by a grant from Arcadia Fund acquired by Wikimedia Deutschland.

Our Guests are …

Benedict Udeh is a member of the Igbo Wikimedia User Group and the founder of the Ig Wikidata Hub which is the Wikidata arm of the User Group. He is the founder and program coordinator for Wiki Mentor Africa. Benedict also works for WMF as a movement communications specialist but will be speaking today as member of the Igbo Wikimedia User Group and the program coordinator for Wiki Mentor Africa.

Raisha Abdillah is based in Jakarta, Indonesia, and has been part of the Wikimedia Movement since 2016, starting as a Wikidata contributor. She has a background in computer engineering and has organized many Wikidata-related events in Indonesia, including workshops, talks, trainings, and meetups. Right now, she is part of the Wikidata Software Collaboration Team and will tell us in a minute what her role is.

Maria Lechner joined Wikimedia Deutschland in July 2022. As the project manager for the multiyear project “Software Collaboration for Wikidata”, funded by the Arcadia Fund, Maria manages the project resources, communicates with stakeholders, provides support for the project partners, and documents the project process to ensure the whole Movement can learn from this prototype of a transnational software collaboration.
